Project Background

Bush’s Proteins ™ is part of Australian family company group, A J Bush & Sons. The business has been operating since 1909 and operating in the rendering industry since 1950s in NSW and 1970s in QLD. They provide the essential service of “rendering” to the meat industry. Bush’s Proteins™ Bromelton collects organic animal material from butcher shops and abattoirs in and around the greater Brisbane metro area and nearby regional centres.

Rendering is the hygienic treatment of high moisture material from the meat industry that is not sold for human consumption.

From this material, Bush’s Proteins™ manufactures nutrient-rich protein meals and tallows/oils. Rendering contributes to the circular economy by diverting putrescible material from landfills into an organic recycling process.

“I have more than ten Gorman-Rupp T3s, and the T10 we got recently is doing a great job. They’re pretty much bullet proof pumps”.

The Option

The Bush’s Proteins team has always looked for equipment that offers them the best return on investment, in that the selected equipment should offer features and benefits commensurate or greater than the price they pay. For wastewater pumps, they choose Gorman-Rupp. According to Byron Boyers (Plant Engineering Manager at Bromelton), “I have more than ten Gorman-Rupp T3s, and the T10 we got recently is doing a great job. They’re pretty much bullet proof pumps”.

The Solution

Gorman-Rupp “Super T Series” self-priming wastewater pumps are mounted at ground level, above the wastewater pits. This makes them easily accessible for monitoring and maintenance. Their internal clearances can be adjusted in minutes, allowing operators to keep pumps at their peak efficiency for the life of the pump. They are also capable of pumping solid materials such as rags, ear tags, gloves and other debris that might block other pumps. Their large removable cover-plate also allow a single operator to remove any larger blockage in minutes, without disturbing piping, or having to employ lifting devices such as cranes.

Gorman-Rupp wastewater pumps can deliver flow rates from 5L/s through to 200L/s, with pressures to 90 metres. They can also be provided in materials of construction to cater for abrasive and/or corrosive wastewater streams.

The Gorman-Rupp Super T Series self-priming centrifugal wastewater/sewage pump has been the world benchmark for this technology since 1963 (>50 years). They have been designed for economical, trouble-free operation, with superior solids handling capability and a large inspection cover to access pump internals for service or blockage removal. Super T Series pumps now have several variants that either improve solids handling or efficiency.

Advantages include:

  • Self-Priming pump has the ability to mount high and dry above the wet well (not in it)
  • Up to 7.6 metre suction lift
  • Handle spherical solids to 76mm in diameter
  • Low cost of ownership
  • Greatly reduced OH&S issues – no more working over water/heights/cranes/heavy swinging weights
  • Surface-mounted pumps with easy access for monitoring or service
  • Advanced safety features including pressure relief valve to protect operators
  • Improved maintenance features to greatly reduce maintenance time and costs, with removable rotating assembly
  • A variety of materials of construction to handle abrasive and/or corrosive fluids
  • “Eradicator” technology for handling rags, wet wipes, rope etc
  • “Eradicator Plus” technology for extreme-duty stringy materials applications

The Gorman-Rupp Super T Series pump with Eradicator™ Solids Management System are a series of self-priming centrifugal pumps designed specifically for handling municipal and industrial wastewater containing stringy, difficult-to-pump, solids in suspension (such as wet wipes, rags and feathers).

They have been designed for economical, trouble-free operation, with design features that deliver superior solids handling capability and a large inspection cover to access pump internals for service or blockage removal. Gorman-Rupp Super T Series wastewater and sewage pumps have been used for pumping of WAS and RAS and for digester recirculation with great success in wastewater treatment plants around the country, as well as food process plants, paper mills and other heavy industries. The Eradicator™ system advances the solids handling capabilities of this range.

Advantages include:

  • Ability to mount high and dry above the wet well [not in it]
  • Self-priming to 7.6 metres
  • Low cost of ownership
  • Greatly reduced OH&S issues
  • No cranes or hoists for access
  • Easy access for monitoring or service
  • Advanced safety features to protect operators [such as the lightweight inspection cover-plate]
  • Improved maintenance features to greatly reduce maintenance time and costs, with removable rotating assembly
  • A variety of materials of construction to handle abrasive and/or corrosive fluid.
  • Sizes 2” to 10”, with flows to 200 L/s and heads to 40 metres.
