Project Background

A large regional council needed to develop a system to effectively treat leachate from their Landfill Waste Facility so it could meet discharge requirements to sewer.

The Problem

The leachate was managed on site by recirculating and spraying for dust suppression at the Waste Facility. However the volume of leachate being generated has increased to such a level that this approach was no longer feasible. There was also odour concerns associated with this approach.

The Solution

A fill and draw sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system was constructed using the existing leachate dams. It was decided that bank mounted aeration using Gorman Rupp self-priming pumps and Gorman Rupp Echo Storm aerators was the best solution for the treatment of the leachate. This system is used to mix in one phase and aerate in another phase using the same pumps and pipework, all done automatically using the control panel. Using Gorman Rupp self-priming pumps and careful placement of the suction and discharge lines allows for excellent mixing and aeration of the entire contents of the dam.

The Results

The Gorman Rupp Echo Storm aerators and Gorman Rupp self-priming pumps allows the system to deliver the required dissolved oxygen using less power than the alternative floating aerators.

The new system reuses most of the existing infrastructure, meaning capital costs are kept to a minimum. This was only achievable using the bank mounted EchoStorm system as it does not have a large footprint and there is nothing in the water other than suction and discharge lines. This also means the EchoStorm system can be used to transfer a lot of dissolved oxygen into a small dam, something that could not be done with floating aerators due to their physical size. There was also concern of bank damage if a crane was required to install and remove floating aerators. The EchoStorm aerators do not require anchor lines and anchor points on the bank. The operators are very happy they don’t have to deal with anything that is out in the water.

There is a very large variability in the quality of leachate and the system requires the mixing and aeration phases to vary accordingly. An easy task using Gorman Rupp self-priming pumps and Gorman-Rupp EchoStorm aerators. Having all the equipment on the bank and not in the leachate is a significant advantage.

Leachate is brought to the SBR via gravity fed and pumped lines from the landfill cells. A combination of Gorman Rupp and Ragazzini pumps are used to pump the leachate to the treatment process, decant to the final lagoon and discharge to the sewer network.
