Project Background

The Kingston District Council [KDC], situated in the picturesque Limestone Coast of South Australia, has been diligently serving its community since its establishment in 1873. Over the years, it has embraced advancements in technology and infrastructure to ensure efficient and reliable service delivery, particularly in the critical domain of wastewater management.

Recently, Heath McAvaney, Regional Manager for Hydro Innovations, paid a visit to the council to discuss their wastewater pumping operations. KDC Operations Manager, Mr Colin Burnett explained the system to Heath.

Colin went on to say that “these pumps don’t miss a beat”, and that “they require little maintenance”.

About The Pumps

They have 11 smaller pump stations pumping to their main station in which two Gorman-Rupp T3A60S-B sewage pumps are located, operating above-ground, allowing easy access. Colin stated that “the Gorman-Rupp pumps do the heavy lifting at the end of the process”, pumping 800 metres to settling ponds.

The Results

Colin went on to say that “these pumps don’t miss a beat”, and that “they require little maintenance”. The pumps were installed well before Colin arrived at the council [7 years ago], and one had in fact clocked up 21,664 hours of operation.
Gorman-Rupp self-priming centrifugal sewage pumps can operate on suction lifts up to 7.6 metres, can deliver flows to 180 litres per second with a single pump, and can deliver pressures to 95 metres. They can also be upgraded with “Eradicator” or “Eradicator Plus” technology to handle flows with heavy concentrations of stringy materials such as rags, wet wipes and matted hair.

These pumps have been employed in sewage pumping stations and sewage treatment plants around the world for decades, and are the first choice for many asset owners and engineers because of their reliability, long service life, and safety. Being located above the ground makes them easy and safe to access for monitoring or maintenance.

Colin’s Gorman-Rupp pumps have been a reliable asset, and he joked to Heath that the long life of the pumps is great for him and the Council, but not so good for Heath’s pump sales.

The Gorman-Rupp Super T Series self-priming dewatering pump has been the world benchmark for this technology since 1963 (>55 years). These engine driven pumps are direct coupled to diesel engines through flexible flywheel couplings to ensure perfect alignment between pump and engine. These are mounted onto our “engitank” platform. The Gorman-Rupp Super T Series pump with Eradicator™ Solids Management System are a series of self-priming centrifugal pumps designed specifically for handling municipal and industrial wastewater containing stringy, difficult-to-pump, solids in suspension (such as wet wipes, rags and feathers).

They have been designed for economical, trouble-free operation, with design features that deliver superior solids handling capability and a large inspection cover to access pump internals for service or blockage removal. Gorman-Rupp Super T Series wastewater and sewage pumps have been used for pumping of WAS and RAS and for digester recirculation with great success in wastewater treatment plants around the country, as well as food process plants, paper mills and other heavy industries. The Eradicator™ system advances the solids handling capabilities of this range.

Gorman-Rupp T Series and Super T Series self-priming centrifugal pumps have been successfully pumping municipal and industrial wastewater for over 5 decades. Over the past few years, with the introduction of wet-wipes and higher safety standards, the need for “choke-free” pumping has led to the development of pumps able to handle wipes, rags, rope, undigested hay and other stringy materials better.
Introducing the Eradicator Plus, for those extreme-duty applications where debris like trash bags, wipes, mop heads, rags, hair, industrial by-products, and agricultural wastes are present. Specifically engineered for cutting and tearing organic solids that enter the pump, the Eradicator Plus is Gorman-Rupp’s most aggressive solids-handling pump.
The Eradicator Plus is equipped with a continuous vane impeller in hardened iron, and an extra-thick G-R Hard Iron wearplate which is equipped with an oversized lacerating tooth that is designed to cut and shred organic solids before they enter the interior of the pump.
