Project Background

Our NSW Regional Manager Phil Rothheudt had the privilege of watching the team from ACT Emergency Services operate our Gorman-Rupp T-Series pump to fill fire fighting aircraft at their Canberra Airport facility (adjacent to RAAF base).

The planes that were being filled were SEAT aircraft (acronym for Single Engine Attack Tanker) and take about 3500L which our pump was able to fill in 2 ¼ to 2 ½ minutes. This is a fantastic increase over the old pump which took 3 ½ minutes. A great result for ACT Emergency Services resulting in a significant reduction in turn-around time. Gorman-Rupp T-Series showing a massive performance improvement with a 35% reduction in filling time.

‘Using the Gorman-Rupp T4 pump, the fill took 14 ½ minutes, down from 23 minutes in the past. A 37% improvement!

The Problem

ACT Emergency Services needed to speed up their fill process using Gorman-Rupp pumps. The plan was to see how fast our pump could complete a fill of 16,000 L. Unfortunately the Bomber didn’t come in the day we were onsite. The fire situation is extremely “fluid” and aircraft can be deployed anywhere at any given moment; deployment is controlled by the teams fighting fires on the ground.

The Solution

The day was to become more exciting, there was hope one of the “Bomber” aircraft (LAT; Large Air Tanker), either a C130 Hercules or the RFS 737 would come in to fill up.

The fire situation is extremely “fluid” and aircraft can be deployed anywhere at any given moment; deployment is controlled by the teams fighting fires on the ground.

The whole aerial situation is controlled by the RJ85 aircraft.

This aircraft acts as the “air traffic controller” flying above the situation, guiding the SEATs and in particular the LAT (helicopters in use as well).

We have subsequently been advised by ACT Emergency Services that the opportunity eventually arrived to fill the 737 LAT(Large Air Tanker).

There are 3 different liquids deployed:
Straight water, straight from Hydrant at the air base, through our pump into the planes.
Retardant (phosphate); this is what you have seen on TV coming out of the 737- premixed on the ground (big white tanks in photos) then pumped into the aircraft.
Foam (Blaze Tamer 380) and water (in yesterday’s case), which is in a concentrated form, then “sucked in” and mixed with the water via a venturi on the suction hose of the pump.

Again using the Gorman-Rupp T4 pump, the fill took 14 ½ minutes, down from 23 minutes in the past. A 37% improvement!

The Results

Using the Gorman-Rupp T4 pump, the fill took 14 ½ minutes, down from 23 minutes in the past. A 37% improvement!

The staff at Hydro Innovations feel privileged to have supplied world leading Gorman Rupp pumps to support the fire-fighting effort.

The Pumps

The Gorman-Rupp Super T Series self priming centrifugal wastewater/sewage pump has been the world benchmark for this technology since 1963 (over 50 years!). They have been designed for economical, trouble-free operation, with superior solids handling capability and a large inspection cover to access pump internals for service or blockage removal.

The Gorman-Rupp Super T Series self-priming dewatering pump has been the world benchmark for this technology since 1963 (>55 years). These engine driven pumps are direct coupled to diesel engines through flexible flywheel couplings to ensure perfect alignment between pump and engine. These are mounted onto our “engitank” platform. This platform includes an extra heavy duty fuel tank base with a 450 litre capacity, lifting points on 4 corners, fork lift pockets, and a central lifting frame. A sheet-metal roof is provided to help protect the engine from the elements.

Advantages include:

  • Simple priming system. Just fill casing with water.
  • No complicated “add-on” priming systems.
  • Pump solid particles up to 76mm dia
  • Pump stringy materials [rags, bags and wipes] with Eradicator technology
  • Greatly reduced OH&S issues
  • Easy access for monitoring or service
  • Advanced safety features to protect operators
  • Improved maintenance features to greatly reduce maintenance time and costs, with externally adjustable clearances.
  • A variety of materials of construction to handle abrasive and/or corrosive fluids
  • Any engine brand required by the customer.
  • Choice of skid or trailer mounted configuration

The Gorman-Rupp Super T Series self-priming centrifugal wastewater/sewage pump has been the world benchmark for this technology since 1963 (>50 years). They have been designed for economical, trouble-free operation, with superior solids handling capability and a large inspection cover to access pump internals for service or blockage removal. Super T Series pumps now have several variants that either improve solids handling or efficiency.

Advantages include:

  • Self-Priming pump has the ability to mount high and dry above the wet well (not in it)
  • Up to 7.6 metre suction lift
  • Handle spherical solids to 76mm in diameter
  • Low cost of ownership
  • Greatly reduced OH&S issues – no more working over water/heights/cranes/heavy swinging weights
  • Surface-mounted pumps with easy access for monitoring or service
  • Advanced safety features including pressure relief valve to protect operators
  • Improved maintenance features to greatly reduce maintenance time and costs, with removable rotating assembly
  • A variety of materials of construction to handle abrasive and/or corrosive fluids
  • “Eradicator” technology for handling rags, wet wipes, rope etc
  • “Eradicator Plus” technology for extreme-duty stringy materials applications

The Gorman-Rupp Super T Series pump with Eradicator™ Solids Management System are a series of self-priming centrifugal pumps designed specifically for handling municipal and industrial wastewater containing stringy, difficult-to-pump, solids in suspension (such as wet wipes, rags and feathers).

They have been designed for economical, trouble-free operation, with design features that deliver superior solids handling capability and a large inspection cover to access pump internals for service or blockage removal. Gorman-Rupp Super T Series wastewater and sewage pumps have been used for pumping of WAS and RAS and for digester recirculation with great success in wastewater treatment plants around the country, as well as food process plants, paper mills and other heavy industries. The Eradicator™ system advances the solids handling capabilities of this range.

Advantages include:

  • Ability to mount high and dry above the wet well [not in it]
  • Self-priming to 7.6 metres
  • Low cost of ownership
  • Greatly reduced OH&S issues
  • No cranes or hoists for access
  • Easy access for monitoring or service
  • Advanced safety features to protect operators [such as the lightweight inspection cover-plate]
  • Improved maintenance features to greatly reduce maintenance time and costs, with removable rotating assembly
  • A variety of materials of construction to handle abrasive and/or corrosive fluid.
  • Sizes 2” to 10”, with flows to 200 L/s and heads to 40 metres.
