The Herd Group
“Reliable pumps that will last forever”- Owner of The Herd Group
Project Background
The Herd Group is an Australian owned company supplying high quality lamb, mutton and beef as well as a number of further processed foods and smallgoods to both local and overseas markets. Founded in 1951 and based in Geelong, Victoria, the company employs over 380 staff.
‘If you’re looking for a wastewater pump that is reliable and will last “forever”, just ask Trevor Eagan about his Gorman-Rupp Trash pumps.’
‘

The company is continually striving to excel in all they do and are committed to quality at every stage of their processing. As such, they only use the best equipment to ensure the best performance in all parts of the process. When Graeme Spence of Hydro Innovations called by to see what they used for wastewater pumps, he met with their Engineering Manager, Mr Trevor Egan. Trevor was kind enough to describe his wastewater system to Graeme and promised to send some photos.
Good to his word, Trevor sent the photos and pointed out to Graeme that all of his wastewater pumps were Gorman-Rupp brand and some had been in service for circa 30 years. He advised that “the pumps operate 24/7. They may look like sh*t, but pump like there’s no tomorrow”.
The Solution
Trevor’s pumps are part of Gorman-Rupp’s “Classic T” range of self-priming wastewater pumps, which have now been superseded by Gorman-Rupp’s Super T line-up. The new Super T range are exactly the same dimensionally and hydraulically as the line they replaced, but have enhanced servicing and safety features. Internal clearances can be adjusted in minutes without having to disconnect the pump from piping or without even opening the pump. This means that pumps can maintain peak efficiencies for the life of the installation, delivering asset owners with energy savings.
The Pumps
Gorman-Rupp pumps are heavily used in the food process industry, particularly by those companies that don’t compromise on safety and reliability. Because they are surface mounted, operators can access them easily for monitoring and maintenance, and because they are cast, machined, assembled and tested in the USA, reliability, performance and parts support is guaranteed.

The Gorman-Rupp Super T Series self-priming dewatering pump has been the world benchmark for this technology since 1963 (>55 years). These engine driven pumps are direct coupled to diesel engines through flexible flywheel couplings to ensure perfect alignment between pump and engine. These are mounted onto our “engitank” platform. This platform includes an extra heavy duty fuel tank base with a 450 litre capacity, lifting points on 4 corners, fork lift pockets, and a central lifting frame. A sheet-metal roof is provided to help protect the engine from the elements.
Advantages include:
- Simple priming system. Just fill casing with water.
- No complicated “add-on” priming systems.
- Pump solid particles up to 76mm dia
- Pump stringy materials [rags, bags and wipes] with Eradicator technology
- Greatly reduced OH&S issues
- Easy access for monitoring or service
- Advanced safety features to protect operators
- Improved maintenance features to greatly reduce maintenance time and costs, with externally adjustable clearances.
- A variety of materials of construction to handle abrasive and/or corrosive fluids
- Any engine brand required by the customer.
- Choice of skid or trailer mounted configuration
