Project Background

Veolia Northern Territory was looking for low maintenance, low operator requirement, simple, cost-effective solution to provide a large amount of micro-sized air bubbles for the DAF system at their wastewater treatment facility at Berrimah, according to their Technical Services Engineer, Dion Meta.

The EDUR pump system is so simple, making it easy and cost-effective to maintain.

The Pumps

The EDUR PBU multiphase pump is a single-stage peripheral centrifugal pump with the unique capability of being able to pump a liquid/gas mixture. The centrifugal pump is constructed of stainless steel, so may be used to handle a variety of liquids. Air, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide and Ozone gases can be introduced into the suction line and transported and used to mix or disperse the gases. This makes the pump ideal for DAF plants, where the multiphase pumps provide the task of air saturation without the use of compressed air (no compressor, air saturation tank or associated controls).

The Benefits

As there is no compressor in the EDUR system, energy costs are lower. The system is also more compact and less complicated than “conventional” systems.

EDUR pumps can be used to treat DAF inflows as low as 2L/s, up to 140L/s with a single pump. And there is no limit to the number of pumps that can be used in parallel, where some USA treatment plants have used up to 12.

EDUR DAF pumps are available in a wide range of materials of construction to suit wide pH variances.

The Results

According to Dion “The results have been very good. We are producing a significant amount of dissolved air and our treatment results have improved (e.g., reduction in sulphide, reduction in hydrocarbons)”.

How the result improves sustainability at the plant

When asked what he expected from his new EDUR pump asset, Mr Meta said “Long term benefits are that our results continue to improve. I am also hopeful that the DAF pump will last a long period of time with little maintenance requirements”.

The EDUR LBU multiphase pump is a multi-stage centrifugal pump with the unique capability of being able to pump a liquid/gas mixture. The centrifugal pump is constructed of either C.I./ Bz/ SS, Nodular Cast Iron, All-Bronze, Stainless Steel, or Super-Duplex Stainless Steel construction, so may be used to handle a variety of liquids.

Advantages include:

  • Liquid flows to 16 l/s
  • Gas content up to 20%
  • Cast iron/Bronze/Stainless steel, Nodular cast Iron, All-Bronze, Stainless Steel, or Super-Duplex Stainless Steel construction
  • Completely replace the “old” DAF system with a single pump
