Gorman-Rupp Pumps solve wastewater pumping issues at packaging plant
Visy Packaging has a state-of the-art drink can manufacturing plant in Stapylton, Queensland. They employ over 50 people and produce export quality cans for local and overseas markets. They were however having chronic reliability issues with their submersible wastewater pumps. They had been trying to solve their issues for seven years when Mr Paul Carter [Engineering Manager – Beverage and Food Can] spoke to one of his contractors. This contractor suggested he look at Gorman-Rupp self-priming wastewater pumps, which had been successfully installed at the Pacific Fair shopping centre.
“The Submersibles couldn’t pump against back pressure and wouldn’t allow us to change the design, but the Gorman Rupp units have allowed us to achieve that, and we now have no issues with our system”.
– Mr. Paul Carter, Engineering Manager
Mr Carter instantly saw the benefit of this style of pump equipment due to them being surface mounted and the maintenance and reliability benefits that they offered. Being surface mounted meant they would be easier to access for monitoring and service. He said that “the Submersibles couldn’t pump against back pressure and wouldn’t allow us to change the design, but the Gorman Rupp units have allowed us to achieve that, and we now have no issues with our system”.
The most suitable pump for the Visy application was the Gorman-Rupp T2A65-B. This is a 50mm self-priming trash pump that is capable of self-priming to depths of 7.5 metres, and able to handle solid particles up to 38mm in diameter and also stringy materials such as rags. If anything too big gets into the pump, it has a large inspection cover plate for operators to access the pump interior.
The Gorman-Rupp T2 is able to deliver flows up to 10 litres per second [L/s], but larger pumps in the range are capable of flows to 200 L/s. Pumps also come in various materials of construction to cope with abrasive and/or corrosive wastewater.
The Gorman-Rupp Super T Series self priming centrifugal wastewater/sewage pump has been the world benchmark for this technology since 1963 (over 50 years!). They have been designed for economical, trouble-free operation, with superior solids handling capability and a large inspection cover to access pump internals for service or blockage removal.

- Self-Priming pump has the ability to mount high and dry above the wet well (not in it)
- Low cost of ownership
- Greatly reduced OH&S issues – no more working over water/heights/cranes/heavy swinging weights
- Surface-mounted pumps with easy access for monitoring or service
- Advanced safety features including pressure relief valve to protect operators
- Improved maintenance features to greatly reduce maintenance time and costs, with removable rotating assembly
- A variety of materials of construction to handle abrasive and/or corrosive fluids
