Industrial Slurry Pumps: Expert Solutions for Abrasive Media
Hydro Innovations supplies slurry pump solutions for abrasive, viscous, acidic and solids-laden fluids across wastewater, industrial, environmental, food processing, mining support and general industry applications.
Our slurry pump range is best suited to low-volume slurry transfer applications, particularly where reliability, suction lift, dry-run capability, solids handling and ease of maintenance are important. Depending on the slurry type, Hydro may recommend a Ragazzini Rotho peristaltic pump, Gorman-Rupp SludgeKat, D Series diaphragm pump, or a Gorman-Rupp 6400 Series solids-handling centrifugal pump.

Reliable Low Volume Slurry Pumps
Hydro Innovations does not have high volume slurry pumps. What we do have is some very high quality pumps if flow rates are less than 20 litres per second.
Ragazzini’s “Rotho” peristaltic pump and the Gorman-Rupp “Sludge Kat” are both high quality pumps with features that deliver longevity and performance.
The Rotho Peristaltic Pump can be employed to transfer abrasive and very acidic sludge and slurries. When pumping these highly aggressive high temperature components with suspended solid contents, the Rotho Peristaltic Pump offers unrivalled performance.
The Sludge Kat is the choice when moisture content is low and the product is thick. It has uses in fly-ash disposal, cement plants, oil and gas drilling, mine tailings, environmental clean-up, or wherever the tough slurry pumping applications are.
Which Slurry Pump Is Right for Your Application?
| Slurry application | Recommended Hydro option | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|
| Abrasive slurry, acidic slurry, food slurry, scum or sludge | Ragazzini Rotho Peristaltic Pump | Slurry transfer where dry-run capability, suction lift and low maintenance are important |
| Thick slurry, low-moisture product, heavy sludge or large solids | Gorman-Rupp SludgeKat | Heavy-duty slurry and sludge applications with high solids content |
| Slurry, mud, sludge and heavy liquids | Gorman-Rupp D Series Diaphragm Pump | Lower-flow slurry, mud and sludge transfer |
| Solids-laden wastewater, sludge or industrial fluids | Gorman-Rupp 6400 Series | Centrifugal solids-handling duties where the application suits a centrifugal pump |
Ragazzini Rotho Peristaltic Slurry Pumps
The Ragazzini Rotho peristaltic pump is suited to abrasive slurry, acidic slurry, sludge, scum and other difficult fluids. Its pumping action uses rollers to compress an elastomeric hose, meaning the pumped media only contacts the hose and flanges rather than internal mechanical components.
This makes the Rotho a strong option where slurry is abrasive, corrosive, viscous or difficult to handle with conventional pumps. The pump can run dry without damage, has no seals or valves to clog or replace, can be reversed, and can deliver flows up to 180,000 litres per hour depending on model selection.
Best-fit applications include:
- Abrasive slurry transfer
- Acidic slurry transfer
- Food and animal waste slurry
- Sludge and scum pumping
- Chemical slurry
Suction lift applications - Slurries where seal or valve clogging is a problem
Gorman-Rupp SludgeKat for Thick Slurry
For thicker slurry and low-moisture material, the Gorman-Rupp SludgeKat is a heavy-duty positive displacement sludge and slurry pump. It is hydraulically driven and built for tough slurry applications where solids, viscosity and pumping resistance are major considerations.
The SludgeKat can pass spherical solids up to 61 mm, operate on suction lifts up to 6.4 m for S.G. 1.0 liquids, produce flows to 14 L/s, and deliver pressures up to 118 m.
Best-fit applications include:
- Thick slurry transfer
- Low-moisture sludge
- Fly ash disposal
- Cement plant slurry
- Oil and gas drilling slurry
- Environmental clean-up
- Heavy industrial slurry
Gorman-Rupp D Series Diaphragm Pumps for Slurry, Mud and Heavy Liquids
The Gorman-Rupp D Series mechanical diaphragm pumps are designed for sludge, slurry, mud and other heavy liquids. They are self-priming and available as bare shaft pumps or mounted with electric motors.
The D Series range can self-prime to 7.6 m, handle spherical solids up to 57 mm, and deliver flows from 20 L/min to 450 L/min.
Best-fit applications include:
- Mud transfer
- Construction slurry
- Sludge and slurry pumping
- Heavy liquid transfer
- Temporary pumping duties
- Lower-flow slurry applications
- Sites needing a portable or simple mechanical slurry pump
Gorman-Rupp 6400 Series Solids-Handling Centrifugal Pumps
The Gorman-Rupp 6400 Series is a solids-handling end-suction centrifugal pump suited to municipal and industrial applications. It is designed for clean liquids through to solids-laden wastewater and sludge, and can be configured with multiple impeller options depending on the duty.
The 6400 Series offers sizes from 50 mm to 150 mm, maximum capacity up to 136 L/s, maximum head up to 52 m, and maximum solids handling up to 102 mm. It can also be configured with Eradicator or Eradicator Plus solids management options for stringy solids.
Slurry Pump Applications Hydro Can Support
Slurry pumps are used when liquid contains suspended solids, abrasive particles, sludge, grit, mud or viscous material. The right pump depends on the solids content, particle size, abrasiveness, viscosity, pH, flow rate and required head.
Hydro Innovations can assist with slurry pump selection for applications such as:
- Wastewater sludge and slurry
- Food processing slurry
- Abattoir and animal waste slurry
- Fly ash disposal
- Cement plant slurry
- Mine tailings support applications
- Oil and gas drilling slurry
- Environmental clean-up
- Mud and heavy liquid transfer
How to Choose the Right Slurry Pump
Choosing the wrong slurry pump can lead to blockages, rapid wear, seal failures, poor priming, high maintenance costs and unreliable operation. Before selecting a pump, it is important to understand the nature of the slurry and the system it needs to operate in.
Important selection factors include:
Flow rate
How many litres per second or litres per minute need to be transferred?
Total head
What vertical lift and pipe friction does the pump need to overcome?
Solids content
What percentage of the fluid is made up of solids?
Particle size
What is the maximum solid size the pump needs to pass?
Abrasiveness
Does the slurry contain grit, sand, ash, cement, minerals or other abrasive material?
Viscosity
Is the slurry watery, thick, paste-like or low in moisture?
pH and chemical compatibility
Is the slurry acidic, alkaline, corrosive or chemically aggressive?
Suction conditions
Does the pump need to lift the slurry from a pit, tank, sump, dam or vessel?
Dry-run risk
Could the pump run dry during operation?
Maintenance access
Does the pump need to be easy to inspect, clean and service?
Hydro Innovations can help assess these factors and recommend a suitable slurry pump based on the fluid, site conditions and performance requirements.
